I’m Ellen Nicholas and I opened Nicholas Learning in September 2015, to help meet the needs of students with special needs – initially serving students with autism and mild cognitive disorders. Recently retired after nearly 20 years in special education, my goal was (and is) to help students with special needs.
In response to parent requests, Nicholas Learning added specialized tutoring for people with dyslexia – the Barton Reading and Spelling System. One in six people have some sort of language/reading problems, with the majority of them having a level of dyslexia. The Barton System is an Orton-Gillingham based program that is highly successful at bringing students to reading at (or above) grade level. This approach works for both younger learners and adults.
Nicholas Learning is a Live Scan company, so each tutor who works with charter school students will have successfully passed a finger print and background check. I am currently a vendor for Ocean Grove Charter School (California.)
Home School Students:
Nicholas Learning is committed to finding ways to support our growing home school community. While I primarily use the Barton tutoring system, I am able to support home school families.
Private School Students:
Many private schools offer tutoring space on campus during school hours. Nicholas Learning is delighted to work closely with these schools to offer needed reading and spelling support the Barton Reading and Spelling System.
Nicholas Learning is able to serve students around the world, using online tutoring on the Zoom platform.
